I just wanted to add here the regular Debian Developer's point of view: after every upload of every package I maintain, I always check the buildd status, investigate all build failures and try to get them working. As long as ia64 is among the build targets[1], I feel it is implied that DDs should try to get the build working. I have been sending bug reports to upstream and they have helped several times in making modifications to the source code to make all builds pass. If you some day in the future think that ia64 work is not valuable use of a regular DD's use of time, I'd appreciate seeing some announcement on debian-devel@ for example so that I and others know that we should invest our limited Debian time in other things.
