Thanks for that. I'd suggest the man page for this is somewhat lacking in detail:

dc_local_interfaces
             List  of  IP addresses the Exim daemon should listen on. If this              is left empty,  Exim  listens  on  all  interfaces.  Sets  macro
             MAIN_LOCAL_INTERFACES only if there is a non-empty value.



vs:

dc_local_interfaces
             List  of  IP addresses and port numbers the Exim daemon should listen on.

             of the form [<ip address>]:<portno>;[<ip address>]:<portno>;... **

             If this is explicitly set to empty (dc_local_interfaces='')  Exim  listens  on  all  interfaces.

             If this is not explicitly set, a default using localhost will be used.

             Sets  macro MAIN_LOCAL_INTERFACES only if there is a non-empty value.


(I suspect the above is not the full story , it's what I've gleaned though trial an error)

**Poor meta syntax  on my part since '[' is literal while '<' is meta syntax ... I'm guessing there is a better "house style"
