If there are any interested developers, it may make sense to completely decouple mu-editor (which is still active upstream, has a decent popcon, and does not _need_ micropython) from the unbuildable firmware-microbit-micropython and its abandoned build system. Whilst the yotta build system for firmware-micropython-microbit seems mostly abandoned upstream - meaning any packager becomes the de facto maintainer - there has been a new release of Micropython for the micro:bit. However, this does not build [0] on recent arm gcc releases, and this has been the case for over a year. [0] https://github.com/bbcmicrobit/micropython/issues/795 It's all very frustrating, and things (including me...) were in a much healthier state 6 years ago when I started packaging this suite.
