More input: I found via logs that I had updates to firmware-intel-sound. I downgraded to firmware-intel-sound_20230210-5_all.deb, then also downgraded firmware-sof-signed_2.2.4-1_all.deb . Still no sound (even on an older kernel), I think that the firmware downgrade did not work as expected (I got some warnings about directories that could not be deleted).
