Wrong: a dependency on HAL is a superfluous and non-portable dependency. You need cdrecord anyway in order to write a CD/DVD, so it is 100% correct to ask cdrecord for information on the drive. - cdrecord knows the needed information and implementes workarounds if needed - HAL is unrelated to CD/DVD recorder specifics and will never give you the right information. ...
