Upstream maintainer here. The issue with the WATCH file is still present. The "2.0.0-rc" version is recognized by the tracker and announced as a "new upstream version".
The bug closure appears to have been done by mistake by another package As wrote before the important part is fixed:
backintime (1.5.3-1) unstable; urgency=medium * d/watch: correct sorting prerelease versions (Closes: #1087686 <https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1087686>) In 1.5.3-1 I had improved/fixed the watch for correctly sorting prerelease replacing - with ~ before was wrong, for example 1.6.0-rc2 > 1.6.0, with that commit 1.6.0~rc2 < 1.6.0 on commit description I wrote "d/watch: improve excluding pre-release versions" but is not correct, because I have not excluded the prerelease, I wrote correctly in the changelog it had correct the bug you opened (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1087686):
I don't think it's necessary to remove pre-releases unless they are not used in any case and it's certain that in the meantime there will be several bugfix versions to be released (is still possible import existing bugfix versions even if d/watch shows a higher rc)
