Hi Salvatore, thanks for the reports, and sorry for the very late reply. #1107963 and #1107965 describe the same problem, so I have merged them and reassigned them to cinnamon-session, where the fix belongs.
I could reproduce it on trixie (cinnamon-session 6.4.0-1, cinnamon-settings-daemon 6.4.3-1, systemd 257.13-1~deb13u1) and on unstable (cinnamon-session 6.6.4-1, systemd 262). This is what happens:
- while playing, Rhythmbox asks the session not to suspend (its Power Manager plugin is built in and always active); - cinnamon-session turns that request into a logind inhibitor lock on "sleep" in "block" mode; - when the lid is closed, cinnamon-settings-daemon locks the screen and asks logind to suspend.
Up to systemd 256, logind ignored block locks taken by the same user who requested the suspend, so this worked. Since systemd 257 logind always obeys them: the suspend request is refused ("Access denied") and the laptop stays on with the screen locked. The same happens with any application that inhibits suspend, not only Rhythmbox.
systemd 257 also added a "block-weak" mode that keeps the old behaviour, and with a lock in that mode closing the lid suspends the system again (tested on both, with cinnamon-session rebuilt with that change). I have proposed upstream that cinnamon-session use it [2]. The upstream issue [1] reports the same root cause.
Until then, pausing Rhythmbox before closing the lid avoids the problem: the plugin releases its lock as soon as playback stops.
