Dear Maintainer,

Without EGL, KiCAD experience on Wayland can be quite bad even when
using XWayland. At least on AMD GPU based systems, there are ~10 second
lags when switching between PCB and Schematics windows on two different
Wayland workspaces.

I've seen commit 5a3af461df6fc6e4be868399277ea4134e703773 ("Revert
"d/rules: Turn option KICAD_USE_EGL on" ), but I think it would be
better to enable EGL support in libglew, libwxwidgets and KiCAD
instead of disabling it everywhere.

At the moment GLX is used on XWayland and that is missing some
workarounds for SwapBuffers(). For EGL wxwidgets already has the
necessary code to disable vsync. See also upstream bugs:

Hi,

I talked to kicad upstream about this, and according to them, if wxwidgets is built with the EGL option, and greater or equal than 3.3.2, then Egl and wayland is used.

Building a wxwidgets 3.2 with --enable-glcanvasegl and KiCad with that should apparently do the trick, I'll try to get a debusine experiment started this week to test this. Regardless, it would be nice to have a newer wxwidgets, too.

Hi,

wxWidgets 3.2 cannot be built with both EGL and GLX support at the same time. Rebuilding with EGL only caused problems for application that only worked with GLX, so we build with GLX support currently.

wxWidgets 3.3.x *does* support building with both EGL and GLX support simultaneously. However, historically we have not packaged the unstable (odd second digit) releases in Debian as they are not API/ABI stable, and so would require a transition for each new release.

Can you wait until wxWidgets 3.4 is released? It is planned to be before the end of the year.

Regards,
Scott
