Package: rsync
Version: 3.5.0+ds1-0+deb13u1
Severity: normal

Dear maintainer,
After the upgrade from 3.4.1+ds1-5+deb13u4 to 3.5.0+ds1-0+deb13u1
(3.5.1+ds1-1 in forky is also affected), rsync stopped respecting
relative paths for --link-dest option and attempts to use the
corresponding absolute paths instead. These aren't the same.

Consider the following reproducer:

  $ mkdir -p foo/bar/{baz,quux}
  $ cd foo/bar/baz
  $ chmod -x ../..  # foo
  $ rsync --link-dest=../quux --files-from=- / . < /dev/null

It worked as intended before, but now it results in:

  --link-dest arg does not exist: /tmp/foo/bar/baz/../quux

It's not a fatal error; the operation succeeds. The problem
is that it copies everything without de-duplication making
my backups much larger than before the upgrade.

At a minimum, the message is wrong (directory exists) and the
documentation is lacking. But I really hope it's not the new
intended behaviour since it's only tangentially related to the
issues the update was supposed to fix. They are irrelevant to
my use case anyway as both ends are on the same local hierarchy
and running as the same user. However, there doesn't seem to
be any kind of escape hatch like the --insecure-links available
to make rsync usable in that setup again.
