I encountered a similar problem. According to my research with a chatbot, adding '-D' would not work well if there are multiple messages in the queue because dma still forks processes to handle all but the last message. Another solution would be to change from 'Type=oneshot' to 'Type=exec, ExecType=cgroup'. However, the unit would stay active until all messages are delivered. If a message is "stuck", dma retries up to 5 days. Mail queued later would not be processed during that time. Therefore, I landed on changing to 'KillMode=process' which leaves per-message dma processes running in the background, similar to how this worked when dma was getting run from cron.
