reopen 251114 !
retitle 251114 wish stinit was called by udev not modprobe
severity 251114 wishlist
thanks

Hello,
I'm reopening this bug as I think it would make more sense to let udev
call stinit rather than modprobe.

With the scsiadd command (or by echoing magic into /proc/scsi/ ) one
can force a rescan of the scsi bus. Consider a system with 2 tape
drives. One tape drive is off when the system is booted. Later the
second tape drive is turned on and the scsi bus rescanned. With the
udev method of calling stinit this newly discovered tape drive will be
initiallised. I this situation the st module is already loaded so will
not be reloaded for the second drive therefore the modprobe method of
calling stinit will fail to init the second drive.

As a consequence of using the udev method the "/etc/init.d/mt-st
start" method _MAY_ be obsolete. I'm not exactly sure how udev works
for compiled in modules. If the st driver is compiled into the kernel
then I think that udev will still call stinit. However I may be
forgetting initrd/intramfs issues here.

Anyway I'm reopening this as a wishlist so that this can be given some
further consideration. I hope that is OK.

Bye for now
Alex Owen
