As suggested by you, I have downloaded and booted the machine by using
linux-image-2.6.17-1-686 (version 2.6.17-3). However, after running stellarium in 1280x1024,
the machine does lockup in the same way as I reported earlier.

We can't support random patched kernels. Try it again with one of our
images.
Also there was no changes in the i830 module.
