I have prepared packages for the "new" upstream version, which indeed fixes the problems on 64bit architectures. I've also included the kFreeBSD fix and generally made it to look like a NMU (but I'm not going to hunt for a sponsor since I know how much time it takes to find one, even for the packages that has my own name in the maintainer field, unless we start getting close to Etch release with this problem still unresolved).
