PS: The problem seems to be related to the most recent libc6
update. After rebuilding and installing 23b-2 and moving back
to libc6 2.3.6-19 (in this sequence!) the problem seems to be
gone, even without explicit interfaces line in smb.conf.

If I install the "official" debian packages for Samba, or if
I upgrade libc6 to 2.3.6.ds1-1, then I get

[2006/08/17 20:51:11, 0] smbd/server.c:main(847)
  smbd version 3.0.23b started.

gcc is 4.1, platform is still amd64.
