Hi,

when using --tar, a problem arise as the uid/gid are resolved from the
dom0 system and so may not be correct on the domU created. The solution
is to use --numeric-owner when de-tar-ing the archive.

However, you might be concerned about the fact that this option is only
available in GNU tar IIRC. Maybe the best way to achieve this would be
to add an option to add custom parameters to tar, or even a custom tar
command (such as star) as it would permit the administrator to choose
what suits best his environment.

I'm really sorry I'm not able to provide a nice patch right now, but if
you need help I may be available in a few weeks to work on this.
