I think I was wrong about "not occuring" in Mozilla's compile.
I checked pristine Mozilla's compile of Thunderbird with Enigmail.
I just copied the "Sent" folder to Local Folders and deleted Sent.msf.
Problem occurs. Not sure if it is fully deterministic but took just 2-3 runs of
Thunderbird to appear (and never recover).
The same for Debian :-(.
Should I forward upstream?
