I use bilingual Gnome environment with two keyboard layouts (setup with Gnome keyboard configuration tool): American without dead keys and Russian. I switch layouts with Alt-Shift key combo. Layouts are per-window. Deskbar is shown inside the panel. When I enter some text in it and want to change keyboard layout (press Alt-Shift), the text field is cleared and loses the focus. If I click the input field again, I may see that its layout has not changed. I may change layout in the Deskbar only if I click on its edit field and press Alt-Shift *before* entering anything else. However, after entering few symbols, the layout is magically switched back again.
