Weired, I can not reproduce this.

I get:

        libgmodule-2.0.so.0 => /usr/lib/libgmodule-2.0.so.0 (0x4001f000)
        libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x40023000)
        libglib-2.0.so.0 => /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0 (0x40026000)
        libgpm.so.1 => /usr/lib/libgpm.so.1 (0x400a7000)
        libnsl.so.1 => /lib/libnsl.so.1 (0x400ad000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x400c2000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)
        libncurses.so.5 => /lib/libncurses.so.5 (0x401f5000)

As you can see, my version is compiled with ncurses support.
Maybe, it is a history of libslang?

I have the MC version from Sarge and Sid, and all two are compiled
with ncurses. Now I do not understand anything...
