I know, but it just seems awkward code (I've done similar things in the past, and introduced as much confusion as I fixed with bugs :().

Could we have this bug, or a new one, in reportbug, tagged appropriately and kept open? I saw recently DDs being encouraged to keep bugs open as pseudo-FAQs.

I'm making a new release, 2.2.22, which adds an entry to the FAQ and mentions the change in boolean syntax in NEWS.
