A couple of issues cropped up however. [bug] kernel does not fully support TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-C2202 This may be specific to the d-i kernel; I have never noticed this problem since completing the installation via a 2.4 kernel and then upgrading to 2.6.16. Oh, the problem: I was unable to install a 2.6 kernel directly with the 'install' boot item. It would repeatedly fail during installation of the base system with the error hdc command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekCompleteError} {IllegalLengthIndication LastFailedSense=0x05 } ide: failed opcode was: unknown end-request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 3880 Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 970 This would happen at different times during base installation. The status would always be 0x51 but the sectore would change. On noticing the failure I went into the shell on VT2 and tried manually mounting. I was able to get the cdrom to remount with: umount /cdrom mount -t iso9660 -oro /dev/cdrom/cdrom0 /cdrom ls /cdrom On some of the umount/mount cycles I noticed that the 'etch' directory was missing from /cdrom/dists/, but then it would return after another umount/mount cycle. I kept plugging away at this until the system locked up completely and I had to abort, after about 3 or 4 cycles. [wishlist] Please consider always displaying the ESSID during wireless network config. I had a small network glitch; I have a wireless router that does not broadcast the ESSID, but a neighbour has one which does broadcast and the installer latched on to that by default. I didn't want to suck up his bandwidth, so this wasn't an appropriate default. Causing the installer to Go Back out of this step and start it again caused it to do the Right Thing, ie lowered the priority threshold enough so d-i asked me for the correct ESSID to use. But I think it would be better if d-i explained which ESSID it found and then always asked if that is the correct one to use. In the usual case it is just one extra 'ok' from the end user, and it allows correct handling of unusual cases. lsmod output: Module Size Used by dm_snapshot 15324 0 dm_mirror 17236 0 apm 18380 1 usbhid 32128 0 sd_mod 16208 0 usb_storage 69312 0 scsi_mod 122220 2 sd_mod,usb_storage ipv6 217760 16 dm_mod 47892 2 dm_snapshot,dm_mirror loop 14472 0 hostap_cs 53588 0 hostap 99140 1 hostap_cs ieee80211_crypt 5312 1 hostap orinoco_cs 16420 1 orinoco 34452 1 orinoco_cs hermes 7136 2 orinoco_cs,orinoco radio_maestro 6656 0 compat_ioctl32 1184 1 radio_maestro videodev 8640 1 radio_maestro joydev 8864 0 mousedev 10368 1 pcmcia 34844 2 hostap_cs,orinoco_cs tsdev 7200 0 firmware_class 9472 1 pcmcia snd_es1968 25600 1 i2c_piix4 8080 0 shpchp 39200 0 pci_hotplug 24180 1 shpchp gameport 13480 1 snd_es1968 i2c_core 19312 1 i2c_piix4 snd_ac97_codec 82784 1 snd_es1968 snd_ac97_bus 2048 1 snd_ac97_codec snd_pcm 74408 2 snd_es1968,snd_ac97_codec snd_timer 20292 1 snd_pcm snd_page_alloc 9800 2 snd_es1968,snd_pcm snd_mpu401_uart 6592 1 snd_es1968 snd_rawmidi 22048 1 snd_mpu401_uart snd_seq_device 8236 1 snd_rawmidi snd 46080 9 snd_es1968,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_ mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device intel_agp 20860 1 soundcore 8672 1 snd agpgart 29232 1 intel_agp evdev 8736 0 yenta_socket 23660 4 rsrc_nonstatic 11840 1 yenta_socket pcmcia_core 37264 3 pcmcia,yenta_socket,rsrc_nonstatic psmouse 34248 0 serio_raw 6436 0 parport_pc 31472 0 parport 31720 1 parport_pc rtc 11252 0 pcspkr 2948 0 floppy 55628 0 ext3 116008 6 jbd 46932 1 ext3 mbcache 7652 1 ext3 ide_cd 35328 0 cdrom 31888 1 ide_cd ide_disk 14528 8 piix 8932 0 [permanent] generic 4164 0 [permanent] ide_core 111440 5 usb_storage,ide_cd,ide_disk,piix,generic uhci_hcd 26640 0 usbcore 110560 4 usbhid,usb_storage,uhci_hcd processor 21696 0 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
