In fact, this is best fixed by using --enable-spell=libsexy or --enable-spell=static, then one gets an entry with spell check - looks nice, works as before and checks spelling. Moreover, libsexy seems to be recommended, see http://forum.xchat.org/viewtopic.php?p=10809.
