At least my ADSL router, A-Link R44, returns mtu=64 when interface-mtu is requested. Such low mtu causes all kinds of problems, for example running dhclient again on that interface leads to error "send_packet: Message too long". If interface-mtu is not requested and the default value is used instead the network works perfectly fine. These A-Link routers are very common here and I suspect A-Link is not the only manufacturer making crappy routers, so this change is potentially causing problems for quite many users.
