I'm not using the debian package... but this was a good suggestion since upgrading nvidia driver solved the problem. I didn't think about it immediately cos generally when something in X related to nvidia change, X doesn't start at all and I have nvidia related error messages in X log. This time everything went "smooth" with the exception of fonts. Sorry for attributing this problem to a debian bug.
