Uhm? A link to the font is already there in the default installation:
% ls -l /usr/share/games/wesnoth/fonts
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 49 2006-09-24 10:37 
DejaVuSans.ttf -> ../../../fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSans.ttf

I've just tried it and it works correctly.
