Your fix reduces an error to a warning, allowing _all_ sorts of bad characters in user names. I am not sure whether I like that. Actually, I hate the idea. I think that we should (a) investigate whether @ in a user name can cause serious harm, and if not, (b) add @ to the list of allowed characters.
