Maybe you are right.

As I understand, the major advantage of the proprietary driver fglrx is support 
of 3D acceleration for modern ATI products.

According to http://wiki.x.org/wiki/radeon the opensource driver shipped with 
Xorg also provides 3D supports the cards with R100/R200/R300 core. These cards 
seem to include those dropped by fglrx 8.29.6
