It should.

I'm pretty sure, dbus was simply not running. Did you disable it from
starting, had it crashed?

Well, the output on the console is quite clear imho, but maybe the error
message should also be displayed in a more readable form (like: D-Bus is
not running. Please start it by executing /etc/init.d/dbus start) in a
message box.
