I have just upgraded Samba in etch (testing) and I get this same segfault, for the same reason.
In my case I have never played with the "passdb backend" setting in smb.conf and the upgrade did display a message saying that is was removing guest from the setting. However, it left the line looking like: passdb backend = tdbsam, Removing the comma has fixed the problem. It seems that at some point in the past some version of samba created the passdb backend line as "tdbsam, guest". In order to avoid potentially thousands of similar segfaults when Etch is released, the upgrade process should also deal with this case.
