Ok, I force-downgraded to the following packages from testing:

xserver-xorg-core_1.0.2-9_i386.deb
xserver-xorg-input-kbd_1.0.1.3-2_i386.deb
xserver-xorg-input-mouse_1.0.4-3_i386.deb
xserver-xorg-video-mga_1.2.1.3.dfsg.1-2_i386.deb

And with no other changes or reconfiguration, X works again. So it
definitely looks like a nasty bug somewhere in X7.1. Probably in
xserver-xorg-video-mga, possibly in xserver-xorg-core.

If you need anything more from me to help track this down, please
don't hestitate to ask. I'm more than willing to re-break my system
to help debug.
