I did also run into this bug a couple of days ago, but wasn't able to trace
it to its source. I found that it helps to run the following:

    $ gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz

and restart compiz. That way you'll loose all the settings you've changed in
compiz, but I guess it's better than deleting the complete gconf and gnome2
directories.

I have personally never used the Ubuntu packages, nor the ones from
compiz.net, so it's probably unrelated.

So far, the only explanation I have is that it might have something to do
with installing a new compiz.schemas file, which is what I did before I was
hit by the bug.
