Hi, I have had this problem (unable to write cache) on a clean install of etch from a full cd image via jigdo (20061009).
(fontconfig version 2.4.1-2) I have not modifed any font config files at all. Specifically the problem appeared when I attempted to install ttf-opensymbol (which is a dependency of OpenOffice).
