I've had to tag this bug unfixed since Arnand reverted the fix. The desktop task currently installs libnss-mdns by default. While recommendations are currently ignored by tasksel, it's also possible to use aptitude directly to install the desktop task. If you do this, you will now get zeroconf installed, due to this bug, which, as this bug notes, will break some systems. Therefore, I feel that this bug should be a higher severity than normal, though probably not RC.
It would be helpful if Arnand would deign to respond to reasoning such as that posted by Sjoerd Simons to this bug report in March. Bug reports that are left open without response for 7 months do not give me a lot of faith in the maintenance level of packages, when I'm trying to decide what packages are appropriate to be included in tasks. Getting a usable mdns setup in the desktop task is my primary reason for caring about this package. Also, note that avahi has a new daemon that can handle link-local IP assignment in an apparently much safer way than zeroconf. That's in the avahi-autoipd package. -- see shy jo
