Snort Version 2.3.0 and later
deprecate /etc/snort/snort.common.parameters,
preferring /etc/default/snort.
[rationale: the startup script actually does use snort.common.parameters
if present]

/etc/init.d/snort until you remove the old configuration file.
[seems more useful to give the actual script name; use active voice and
hint more strongly that administrator must do something; antecedent of
"it" is technically /etc/init.d/script]

[maybe add: You must do /etc/init.d/snort restart after changing the
configuration.]

You're welcome.

Don't forget the original problem was just that the NEWS file wasn't
getting printed out by apt-get.
