Just for the record: Knowing this is the cause of the problem it is possible to workaround it by booting with: linux persistent break=mount waiting with (intiramfs) prompt for USB devices to be autodetected and then pressing Ctrl-D to continue. -- =*= Łukasz Pankowski =*=
