This is a known "bug" in the SquirrelMail stable branch. The problem lies in the limitations of PHP and SquirrelMail probably not dealing with that adequately. Do you have "server side sorting" enabled in /etc/squirrelmail/config.php (or through squirrelmail-configure)? That should aleviate the problem.
