Here's upstream's answer from their bugtracker:

I hope he'll correct that in a newer version of the manual. However, if
one reads the text careful it's clear that
- the first example in the section, the one which I tried, must be
buggy, and also how to correct it
- that, while the manual is talking about trees all the time, trying the
trees library might help.
In other words, this is unclear documentation and not a bug in the
package itself, and therefore, IMO, of minor severity.
