It should work with both. I just verified that nm-applet accepts and
connects successfully with either the pre-shared-key (256bit hex key) or
the ascii passphrase.
Maybe you typed in the passphrase incorrectly. Could you please try
again (delete the old stored key in gnome-keyring first using
gnome-keyring-manager) with the ascii passphrase you setup on your WLan
router.

As the PSK is computed from the passphrase and the essid, maybe NM does
not correctly detect/use the essid. Do you use a hidden essid?
If so, does it work if you enabled essid broadcasting?
