Package: phpbb2-conf-mysql Version: 2.0.21-3 Severity: normal The phpBB integration with MySQL is not as smooth as it could be. First of all, I didn't have mysql-server installed and yet the package assumed it was present. When I installed it afterwards, it was not started until after the dpkg --reconfigure of phpbb2-conf-mysql was running another time, leading to another failure to connect to the MySQL server. When I ran dpkg --reconfigure -a manually afterwards (third try), it finally worked.
Another point where the full potential of a 100% smooth integration is missed is that I was asked the MySQL root password. It should at least hint at the fact that it's empty by default when maintained by the debian package. The root cause I see for such kinds of problems is that for Debian/Ubuntu/... there is still no general server integration mechanism. In the future, a couple of additional web frameworks will have to be added. Projects like GForge or phpBB2 are already present. I'm working on yet another one myself and would be interested in a more coherent setup procedure for packages at least for SQL and web servers. Would you be interested in joining such an effort? I was hinted at dbconfig-common and then there's wwwconfig-common but both are not yet up to the level they should be. For example, two common usecases for www setups are "run on a publically accessible host" and "run on to-be-created artificial hostname on localhost".
