You have a point there, I hadn't realized that the gnus package doesn't carry this patch; apparently nobody ever complained about that either. So if it works equally well for people, and since we don't have the rationale for the change in the first place, I'd rather just drop it. All things being equal, every Debian-specific patch has a cost.
