That sounds about correct. You can recover by going back to partitioning.

But why?
I canceled the second "Install the base system" before it touched my system, so there shouldn't be a reason to do it again.

Make sure that you do install the base system again after that.
The steps for setting up users/clock/timezone can be skipped.

I agree that the installer could be more strict and clear in it's warnings, but that is definitely minor.
