Hello! I cc:ed the emacs-snapshot package because while this bug belongs to auctex, it's emacs-snapshot specific (at least ATM). Moreover, it's an upstream one, solved with commit 5.419 [1], thus the tag. Briefly, please apply the upstream fix to the Debian version. Now, the long story... I use emacs-snapshot-nox and about one and half months ago (sorry, I didn't find the time to investigate before) I discovered that my emacs doesn't work with auctex, in fact it opens a .tex file in the fundamental mode.
