This is the 2.6 install, right ? Can you confirm that 2.4 installs are OK with that machine and D-I build ? If so, the problem can easily be circumvented by making a default install, then upgrade to a 2.6 kernel later (in case the HD detection works with 2.6 kernels on installed systems).
