Unfortunately that latest version requires xserver 1.2 (X11R7.2), which we cannot bring into Debian unstable until after etch is released. Hopefully the new changes will have fixed up the console video state. It's possible we'll have the new version ready in experimental first, depending on how much longer etch takes to finish.
