Hi, Don't know whether this will help the other submitters, but it might help people coming Google.
I was having this exact problem on my machine. Doing strace, I noticed that it was outputting messages about a 32-bit process. I found that, somehow, I'd ended up with a 32-bit copy of fontconfig as well as a 64-bit one. (I think it was my fault.) Removing the 32-bit one and re-generating everything with the 64-bit copy, I have no problems.
