Because 0.5.x stabilised just so close before etch release and all previous releases of 0.5.x was called development. And because upstream change ABI of libpoppler and don't increase SONAME, and they even consider it to be OK. And unfortunately they have also changed API, so it's not just recompile and forget, but all packages using libpoppler has to be patched and recompiled (bigest package being tetex).
