It must be some interaction of fail2ban and python-central, since other packages are not producing this warning. Maybe it's something that was set in a previous version of the package, and is now remembered by python-central? I think it would be good to get to the bottom of things; you could try reassigning to python-central and see what happens--or just ask them. I take it there is no substantive reason the package needs python 2.3 as opposed to 2.4.
