I think I had problem with gdm too, because it wasn't upgraded the first dist-upgrade. After logging in, the whole box seems to have frozen. But this might be a bug in X too, I'm not sure, and I haven't seen this again. I do have other problems with X which probably specific to my hardware, and have opened a bug for that. Anyway, I dist-upgraded again, so that everything was upgraded, and everything seemed to be working then.
