That means that you don't have a _matching_ CD image on the USB-stick.

For this hd-media image:
ftp://ftp.debian.de/debian/dists/etch/main/installer-i386/current/images/hd-media/boot.img.gz

... you should copy an *RC1* CD image onto the USB-stick together with the 
hd-media images. You can download an RC1 CD image from:
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
