I have an Epson 1640SU, I added myself to the scanner group. I use sane from testing. I think it should be easier for users to scan as non-root user. The permissions of the files in /dev should somehow be handled automatically. Maybe a question when installing libsane, if you want to add all users to the scanner group and modify the permissions in /dev or something.
