Cool. Now I only need a patch to make this the default for USB and
firewire devices. I will try later this week, but any help will be
appreciated.

Can't be done: "unless /dev/cdrw already exists" means that each cdrom,
cdrw, etc alias would have to be handled independently and devices would
get totally unrelated numbers, possibly not even in the same order.
I think this would be too much confusing.
